In general, you can tell a lot about a person’s level of familiarity with the investment world by whether the term “hedge fund” tunes them out of the conversation. A financial novice may nod their head, then change the subject. Someone who has enough experience with investments and investment vocabulary will ask about the strategy, because they know that the term only refers to the capital structure of an investment vehicle, and tells you nothing about the strategy behind the investment itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are hedge funds misunderstood?<\/span><\/p>\n

You are dealing with an industry that likes to stay out of the headlines, so the only news the public hears is generally negative. That can color the perception of the industry. The other issue that keeps the public from understanding the industry is that, today, many hedge funds do not “hedge” market risk and many mutual funds do. This wasn’t always the case. Two of the most significant developments over the last decade are the use of hedging strategies in mutual funds available to all investors, and the proliferation of hedge fund strategies away from the equity markets.<\/span><\/p>\n
